Boston Police Recover Firearm in Foot Pursuit

Police recovered a firearm and arrested a man after a foot pursuit in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood.

According to police, officers tried to stop a motor vehicle for a traffic infraction in the area of 38 Greenwood Street just after 3 a.m. Sunday when the front seat passenger suddenly exited the vehicle and began to run. Police say he was clutching the waistband of his pants.

Officers pursued the man on foot to a nearby yard where he was placed in custody after failing to scale a fence, police said.

The man was identified as Steven Woumnm, 30, of Dorchester.

Officers safely recovered a 9mm FED PA-63 handgun which the suspect had discarded as he fled, police said.

Woumnm is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and trespassing.

He will appear in Dorchester District Court. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
