A 20-year-old man was shot in the head outside a New Haven gas station on Monday morning and police are asking residents to stay inside as a precaution as the search for the shooter continues.
Officers responded to the Sunoco Gas Station, at 350 Foxon Boulevard, at 8:08 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a man was shot in the head.
The victim, Donald Keys, 20, of New Haven, had been shot outside the door to the gas station and convenience store and is in critical, but stable condition at Yale-New Hospital, police said.
"We ask people to stay indoors at least for the short time from now as investigators are out in the neighborhoods, trying to determine if the perpetrator of this crime might have left on foot and is somewhere still in the area," David Hartman, the media liaison and public information officer for the New Haven Police Department, said during a brief news conference on Monday.
Keys has been sedated and was able to speak with medical personnel, but has not yet spoken with investigators, according to police
Police said witnesses have been cooperative, but no one has been able to describe the shooter or say whether the person ran from the scene or left in a car.

Detectives from the department’s Major Crimes Division and Bureau of Investigation are at the scene, collecting evidence and speaking with potential witnesses, but there is no surveillance video from the store.
Roads have been closed as police search for the shooter and the gun, but the roads are expected to open by lunchtime.
"This had greatly impacted rush hour traffic this morning. Everything was a mess out here," Hartman said. "We appreciate people trying to avoid the area and finding an alternate route."
