Police Say Love Triangle Led to Fatal Swanville, Maine Shooting

The victim, who was identified as 26-year-old Shane Sauer, was shot seven times

A state police affidavit filed in a killing in the town of Swanville, Maine, indicates a love triangle ended with a man being shot seven times.

Twenty-two-year-old Austin McDevitt of Morrill, who's charged with murder, told detectives he was familiar with the victim, 26-year-old Shane Sauer, of Belfast, because they were both in a relationship with the same woman. A judge on Monday ordered McDevitt held without bail.

The state police affidavit indicates McDevitt was with the woman when Sauer showed up and started punching him early Friday. It indicates McDevitt told police went to his car, retrieved a gun, and shot Sauer.

The affidavit said McDevitt emptied his gun, striking Sauer seven times.

McDevitt is due back in court next month. His attorney didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.
