Police: Woman Stole $2K in Rare Books

Patricia Crosby pleaded not guilty Monday to retail theft

A woman is accused of stealing $2,000 worth of rare books about alchemy from a Vermont antique shop.

Patricia Crosby pleaded not guilty Monday to retail theft. The Bennington Banner reports the 52-year-old Crosby was released on the condition she not visit the Owl's Nest Upholstery and Antique Store in Bennington.

A police affidavit says Crosby was a regular visitor. The books fell out of a case and when the store owner went to put them back, Crosby said she'd take care of it.

When the owner checked on the books later, she noticed some were missing. She asked Crosby about it; Crosby said she didn't know. She denied taking the books, but later gave them to police.

It wasn't immediately known if she had a lawyer.
