Police are investigating after a man found his pony shot to death Sunday in Highgate, Vermont.
Harold Derosia, 54, had last seen the animal Tuesday. Sunday morning, he found the horse dead from a gunshot wound.
Derosia told police his horses are free-range, and that he would go to the barn throughout the day to feed them. When he didn't see the pony, he went looking for it.
According to police, the pony was in a pasture that could not be seen or accessed from the road.
Investigators recovered a .50 caliber muzzle-loading, copper-jacketed bullet from the horse.
Anyone with information is asked to call Vermont State Police.
