Portland Officials to Vote on Deal to Build Waterfront Trail

The trail would be located in the city's downtown area

Portland officials will consider whether to approve a deal with state transportation officials for the design and construction of a waterfront trail.

The Portland Press Herald reports City Council on Monday will vote on an agreement to create the West Commercial Street Trail.

The trail would run from the Star Match office buildings to the Fore River Trail. It would make an important connection in the city's longtime goal of having a trail around its downtown area.

Construction would cost roughly $350,000. Eighty percent would be covered using federal sources.

City transportation officials say the trail would allow for non-vehicular access to downtown Portland.

If approved, construction would probably begin in the summer of 2018.
