Great White Shark Possibly Seen Near Maine Beach

People aboard a boat just over a mile from Moody Beach report seeing a shark early Saturday afternoon

People on a fishing boat say they saw a great white shark off the coast of Moody Beach Saturday afternoon, according to police in Wells, Maine.

Wells Harbormaster tried to find the shark around 1:30 p.m., but was unable to do so. The U.S. Coast Guard and nearby towns were notified of the situation.

Officials don't think the potential sighting calls for beach closures at this time. The Wells, Maine, Police Department said on its Facebook page that such a sighting is "abnormal given the time of year and proximity to the beach."
