Three days after a ferocious nor’easter battered the South Shore, toppling trees and ripping utility lines, power slowly returned to many communities that spent days in the dark.

Utility crews crisscrossed neighborhoods, hanging up fallen power lines across Hanover, Massachusetts, as the debris cleanup continued throughout the town.

"It was a problem to do just basic stuff," said Daniel Pineau of Hanover, whose power returned on Friday while he warmed up and charged his phone at the public library. "It's a pain in the neck."

Hundreds of Hanover residents spent days with the lights out. But Hanover wasn't alone. Other South Shore communities, including Cohasset and Scituate, spent the last couple days cleaning up from the storm that put them in the dark.

“I was pretty well cut off,” Pineau said. “I was monitoring the outage map and the five-minute update, the zone that affected my house, was gone.”

As of Saturday afternoon, just over 8,000 customers were still without power statewide.

By mid-afternoon, fewer than one percent of customers in Hanover were still in the dark.

Eversource says it expects to have everyone in the South Shore back online by 8 p.m. Saturday.
