Pro-Marijuana Group to Gather Signatures for Initiative

Legalize Maine says it will soon start gathering signatures so it can get the issue on the ballot in 2016

An activist group that wants to legalize marijuana in Maine says it has submitted a citizens' initiative to state officials so it can try to get the issue up for a public vote.

Legalize Maine says it will soon start gathering signatures so it can get the issue on the ballot in 2016. Group president Paul McCarrier says marijuana "has been an economic engine for Maine's rural economy" for decades and it's time to let voters make it legal. The group announced its plans for a citizens 'initiative and petition drive in November.

The Washington, D.C.-based Marijuana Policy Project is also eyeing a legalization ballot initiative in Maine for 2016. Medical marijuana became legal in the state 15 years ago.
