First Homicide Victim of 2019 in Providence Is Identified

As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests had been made. The investigation is on-going.

Providence police have identified the victim of the city's first homicide of 2019.

The department on Twitter Saturday afternoon said 41-year-old Gerald Taylor, who was last known to live in Pawtucket, was shot and killed earlier at 1:30 a.m. on Andem Street.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact them.

In a written statement, City Councilman Michael Correia says he has heard from multiple concerned neighbors of the Steam Tap bar on Andem Street, near where the man was killed. He says it's not the first violent incident at the location and he's working with city officials and community residents to make sure the bar is closed until the Providence Board of Licenses holds a full hearing regarding the incident.

He says the safety of residents is paramount.
