A Providence teenager was killed in a crash on I-95 in Rhode Island late Friday, authorities said.
According to state police, 16-year-old Jasmine Reyes was unlicensed and driving her friend’s car in the southbound lane of the highway near Warwick when the vehicle hit a guardrail. The car’s lights broke in the crash making it hard to be seen by other vehicles, Moynihan said.
Shortly after, a tow truck travelling in the same lane hit the car, a state police spokesperson said. The impact caused the car to spin across the highway, throwing the girl out of the car. It remains unclear whether Reyes was trying to get out of the car when it was struck.
Reyes was transported to a hospital where she died from her injuries.
A passenger in her car, Thomas Dimauro, 18, of Warwick, suffered minor injuries. He was also the owner of the Toyota Corolla Reyes was driving.
The driver of the truck, Leonard Sherman, 38, of Cranston, also suffered minor injuries.
Parts of the highway were closed until about 2:00 a.m. The crash remains under investigation.

Speed does not appear to have been a factor, Captain Moynihan said, and there were no signs of impairment by either driver. It is unclear at the time whether the victim was wearing a seat belt at the time of the first crash.
