The body of an 11-year-old boy missing since Friday afternoon has been found in waters off Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
Department of Environmental Management spokeswoman Gail Mastrati tells the Providence Journal his body was found by searchers at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The search led by the Portsmouth Fire Department had resumed early Saturday after being suspended around midnight.
Mastrati said the boy was from Providence. His name has not been released.
The boy's father reported him missing at about 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Blue Bill Cove area. The father said the boy suddenly went into deep water and slipped below the surface. Family members tried to rescue him.
The Department of Environmental Management said the area where the boy was swimming is known more for fishing than swimming.
