Rally to Support Closed School for Deaf

A group called Save Austine School is planning to hold a march and rally in Montpelier, Vermont

The Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing has closed, but supporters and alumni haven't given up on it.

A group called Save Austine School is planning to hold a march and rally in Montpelier on Saturday, March 27, 2015.

The Austine School, which opened in 1912, has seen declining enrollment over the past several decades as deaf and hard of hearing students typically were educated in their home districts.

The Brattleboro Reformer
reports James Tucker, an Austine School alum and superintendent of the Maryland School for the Deaf, said the group is going to ask Gov. Peter Shumlin and legislators to have the state take over the school and turn it into an independent state agency.
