Red Cross Seeks Blood Donations in Southeast Massachusetts in Wake of Shortage

A Red Cross official said they are in need of donors of all types, especially type O

The American Red Cross is asking for donations during a blood shortage.

Thousands of people responded to the emergency call for blood and platelet donations issued by the organization in early July, but a spokeswoman is saying there continues to be a need for donors of all types, especially type O.

The Cape, Islands and Southeast Massachusetts Chapter of the American Red Cross sent out a list of blood drives for August on Tuesday.

Spokeswoman Kelly Isenor says "Right now, blood products are going out faster than they are coming in." She says it's normal to see fewer blood donations during the summer because of vacations.

Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be given to any patient. Type O positive is the most transfused blood type.
