Red Sox Twitter Fail During Ferguson Announcement

The team sent out a poorly timed tweet about Monday's big-money signings just as the Ferguson decision was being announced

The Boston Red Sox are taking some heat on Twitter for some poor timing on a tweet the team sent out just as the Ferguson grand jury decision was being announced on Monday night.

As prosecutor Bob McCulloch was announcing that police officer Darren Wilson would not be indicted in the shooting death of unarmed black teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, the Red Sox sent out a tweet celebrating two key player signings by the team on Monday.

"So how was everyone's Monday?" the Red Sox tweeted from their official account at 9:26 p.m., as people on the streets of Ferguson and around the country were learning of the grand jury's decision.

The tweet was clearly meant to trumpet Monday's big-money signings of Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez, but the timing prompted immediate criticism from other Twitter users.

"Wow, @RedSox. Just wow. Epic wow," tweeted Bill Kole of the Associated Press.

"Seriously?" added Georgy Cohen.

"@RedSox Wow. Bad timing. Bad bad timing," said Justin Meader.

The tweet was deleted from the Red Sox Twitter account within minutes of its original posting. The team released the following statement on Tuesday morning.

"The intent of the tweet was in reference to a busy day at Fenway. However, the message was ill timed and deleted immediately given last night's national news."
