Retired Vermont Cop Accused of Sex Crime

A former sex crimes investigator in Vermont is accused of inappropriately touching a child.

Vermont State Police arrested Arthur Cyr, 51, of Bristol, Vermont, Wednesday on a felony charge of lewd or lascivious conduct with a child under the age of 16, according to a news release from the department.

Cyr allegedly touched a girl inside a Bristol home on New Year's Eve in 2016. The incident was not reported to the police until last month, and state police launched an investigation on Dec. 14.

The former officer retired from the Burlington Police Department in March 2016. He was hired in 1995. He was assigned to the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations.

"An allegation like this against a retired police officer will always be painful and disappointing, but given Art Cyr's prior role of supervising the county's child abuse investigations, it is especially troubling," Burlington Police Chief Brandon Del Pozo said.

Cyr faces between two to 15 years behind bars and up to $5,000 in fines. He is due in Vermont Superior Court in Middlebury on Jan. 28 at 2 p.m.
