Rhode Island Gets Federal Grant for Emergency Preparedness

Rhode Island has been awarded a federal grant to ensure its emergency responders can effectively respond to incidents involving hazardous materials.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, a Rhode Island Democrat, announced the funding for the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency Friday. The agency is getting a Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness grant for about $125,000 to help it better respond to hazardous materials transportation incidents.

The grant program is administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

Reed says the grant will help responders in Rhode Island prepare for a range of emergencies, from oil spills to chemical explosions, and help ensure they can protect the public from hazardous materials.

The grants are funded by fees paid by shippers and carriers of hazardous materials in commerce.
