Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo has signed an executive order aimed at curbing health care costs.

The Providence Journal reports the order issued Wednesday seeks to keep health care cost growth below 3.2 percent annually through 2022.

The order says individuals, families and businesses are struggling to pay health care costs, and spending has historically outpaced economic growth in Rhode Island.

The order directs the state health insurance commissioner's office and the Executive Office of Health and Human Services to develop strategies to meet the target.

The order also directs the Cost Growth Steering Committee to monitor costs and issue recommendations.

Administration spokesman Josh Block says the governor, Brown University, and the steering committee are working to ensure health care costs remain level with economic growth.
