Rhode Island Investigating Finances After Death of High Level Employee

State auditors are engaged in a financial investigation at the Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals following the "tragic" death of a top-level employee.

Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo's administration will neither confirm nor deny reports that auditors are looking into the potential theft of a large amount of money.

The Providence Journal reports BHDDH spokeswoman Linda Reilly says the agency is "heartbroken by this tragedy" and is deferring comment on any potential investigations to the state Department of Administration.

Agency spokeswoman Amanda Clarke says materials have been referred to state auditors as part of an active investigation but says officials cannot comment further.
