Rhode Island Police Arrest School Bus Driver for Drunken Driving

Police say they have charged a 27-year-old school bus driver with drunken driving in Lincoln.

Captain Philip Gould says police were notified by Northern Elementary School staff that they thought a bus driver who pulled up to the school around 3 p.m. Friday had been drinking.

Witnesses told responding officers that they observed Ayla Johnson stumble out of her vehicle and head into the school building. There were no students onboard at the time.

Police say officers found that Johnson smelled strongly of alcohol when they questioned her in the school nurse's office. Police say Johnson was given a field sobriety test, which she failed.

It was later confirmed that Johnson had driven students from Lincoln High School and Lincoln Middle School before arriving at Northern Elementary that day.
