Rhode Island Police Make Gun Arrest Near Scene of Shooting

A 20-year-old Newport, Rhode Island, man has been arrested on weapons charges and police are testing a gun seized from him to determine whether it was used in a shooting that left a Middletown man wounded.

Police say Elijah Weeden was found carrying the unlicensed handgun shortly after Tuesday night's shooting at the Bayside Village Housing complex.

A 23-year-old Middletown man, whose name has not been released, was found in a parking lot suffering from three gunshot wounds to his legs.

Police say the shooting victim could not identify his assailant.

Weeden is charged with possessing an unlicensed handgun, possessing cocaine and possessing a handgun with an altered serial number.

He was being held Thursday without bail as authorities investigate whether he violated probation from a December drug conviction.
