Several Rhode Island communities have warming shelters open, as the state grapples with a deep freeze that's sending wind chills well below zero.
The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency is urging people to take precautions in Friday's cold and make sure to dress in warm layers when going outside. EMA Director Peter Gaynor says if people lose their heat and need emergency heating, they can dial 2-1-1.
Gov. Gina Raimondo is asking people to check on relatives and neighbors to make sure they have what they need to stay warm.
In addition to the cold, the National Weather Service says many areas of the state can expect up to 5 inches of snow Friday and into Saturday.
