Knife Pulled in Market Basket Parking Lot Road Rage Incident, Police Say

Police say Jose Barrera-Mendoza, 40, of Connecticut, followed a driver into the parking lot and threatened him with a knife

A man pulled a knife on another man in the parking lot of a Market Basket in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in a road rage incident that resulted in his arrest Friday morning, police said.

Jose Barrera-Mendoza, a 40-year-old man from Connecticut, is facing charges of assault by means of a dangerous weapon and providing a false name to police, as well as other motor vehicle-related charges, according to Chelsea police. His children were in the car during the incident.

The other driver told police he had been traveling on Everett Avenue, near the Market Basket, when Barrera-Mendoza, in another vehicle, exchanged words with him at a stop sign, police said.

Barrera-Mendoza followed the man into the Market Basket parking lot, got out of his vehicle and threatened the man with the knife, according to police.

When police caught up with Barrera-Mendoza on nearby Hawthorne Street and arrested him, Barrera-Mendoza's two children, ages 8 and 11, were in the vehicle. The children were reunited with their mother a short time later.

It's unclear when Barrera-Mendoza will appear in court to face charges or if he has an attorney.
