Salem Seeks Korean War Veterans, Dead or Alive, for Award

Salem is trying to track down all city residents who served in the Korean War, both living and dead, for a special Veterans Day ceremony.

City veterans' agent Kim Emerling tells The Salem News the consulate general of South Korea will be at the Nov. 11 ceremony to award the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal to veterans of the conflict. Eligible veterans must have served on the Korean Peninsula between June 25, 1950 and July 27, 1953.

Emerling says the medal is a token of appreciation from the South Korean government.

The medal can be awarded posthumously, so family members can still nominate late relatives who served.

She says more than 30 veterans have already been nominated.

The deadline to apply for the medal by contacting her office is Wednesday.
