Although a large area of high pressure will deliver fair and dry weather for the next few days, temperatures will be on the rise after this midweek shot of chilly air.

Wind direction is so important this time of year. With ocean water temperatures running only at 40 degrees, wind off the water ensures cool conditions for anyone near the coast.

After Tuesday’s cool northerly wind from Canada holds high temperatures near 40 with wind chill values in the 30s at the warmest time of day, lows will drop below freezing Tuesday night. The wind is expected to be light and variable Wednesday, affording a sea breeze at the coast.

Wednesday’s sea breeze will ensure coastal communities, including Boston, will not gain the few degrees over Tuesday that the interior is expected to gain. This calls for another exceptionally cool afternoon for Boston Metro.

Nonetheless, by Thursday, the dome of high-pressure shifts off the coast and the clockwise flow of wind around its center will put New England squarely in a southerly wind flow. This will make things cool for the South Coast, but milder for most of us.

Highs will be reaching the middle 50s and a southwest wind will be pushing temperatures to 60 Friday. The late week does bring a frontal boundary – a dividing zone of warm and cool air – into New England, and this will promote some scattered showers Thursday night into Friday.

A chance of showers from time to time will occur through the weekend but mostly focused on Thursday night into Friday morning.

Northern New England will mostly get a chance of showers Saturday and regionwide on Sunday. Another shot of cool air is possible early next week before a return to seasonable temperatures…but also the return of increased shower chances in our exclusive First Alert 10-day.
