Sen. Markey: Car Makers Need to Boost Wireless Security

 U.S. Sen. Edward Markey is highlighting what he says are security and privacy gaps in the nation's cars and trucks.

The Massachusetts Democrat released a report Monday outlining his concerns, including cars with wireless technologies that may be vulnerable to hackers.

Markey said not only can hackers hijack the controls of some popular vehicles - causing them to suddenly accelerate, turn, kill the brakes or activate the horn - but could also gain access to driver and vehicle information, including driving history.

Last November, the industry agreed to a voluntary set of privacy principles.

Markey, a member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, said lawmakers need to work with the industry and cyber-security experts to establish clearer rules to guarantee the safety and privacy of drivers.
