Wrong-Way Crash on I-691 East in Meriden Is Fatal: Police

One person was killed in a crash on Interstate 691 East in Meriden that left the highway closed for around six and a half hours Tuesday.

Connecticut State Police said 35-year-old Marieta Morchadze, of Brooklyn, New York, was killed when the Nissan Versa she was a passenger in collided with a tractor-trailer on I-691 eastbound. Police said the Nissan was traveling the wrong direction in the right shoulder of the highway at the time of the crash.

The Nissan’s driver was taken to Hartford Hospital for treatment. The tractor-trailer’s driver was not hurt.

The crash happened at 3:05 a.m. near exit 5. The highway was closed for hours and reopened just after 9:30 a.m.

State police continue to investigate. Anyone who witnessed the crash should contact Trooper First Class Myer of Troop I at 203-393-4200.
