Motorcyclist Dies in Fiery Ledyard Crash

A motorcyclist died after colliding head-on with a car in Ledyard on Labor Day, causing both vehicles to burst into flames, according to the fire department.

Fire officials said the crash happened around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 117/Colonel Ledyard Highway and Thomas Road.

First responders arrived to find flames consuming both the car and motorcycle and interfering with overheard wires, according to the fire department. The fire also spread to brush on the side of the road.

LifeStar was called to the scene to transport the motorcyclist but was later canceled, fire officials said. Both people riding in the car made it out on their own and were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Route 117 remains closed between Spicer Hill Road and Rose Hill Road. The Connecticut Department of Transportation has set up a detour, and drivers are asked to avoid the area.

Crews from Eversource also responded.

The motorcyclist has not been publicly identified.
