Rep. Moulton: Democratic Loss in Georgia Special Election Is 'Wake Up Call'

Republican Handel Thanks Trump After Winning Ga. House Seat

Republican Karen Handel defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff on June 20 in Georgia's hotly contested House race in the Atlanta suburbs, the most expensive House race ever. The seat was left vacant when Tom Price resigned to join President Donald Trump's administration. (Published Wednesday, June 21, 2017)

A Massachusetts congressman is speaking out after the Democratic Party lost a tight congressional special election race in Georgia Tuesday night.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton said on Twitter that the closely-watched race between Republican winner Karen Handel and Democrat Jon Ossof needs to "be a wake up call for Democrats" and that the party needs to move on from its bitter 2016 loss.

"We need a genuinely new message, a serious jobs plan that reaches all Americans, and a bigger tent not a smaller one," he said. "Focus on the future."

Moulton, whose name has been kicked around by political analysts as a potential 2020 presidential candidate, has previously said that he's not seeking a higher office.

However, experts say Moulton, who graduated from Harvard University and did four military tours in Iraq, would be an interesting contender.
