Severe Weather Brings Down Trees, Power Lines to Parts of Massachusetts

Severe weather brought heavy rain and hail to many parts of Massachusetts on Tuesday.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for parts of Worcester, Franklin and Middlesex counties as the storm moved through the region.

Hail the size of a quarter was reported in some areas including Chelmsford, Billerica and Peabody.

Trees and power lines were reported down in many communities including Concord, Foxboro and Orange.

On Hayward Mill Road in Concord, crews worked to restore power to two homes after a tree took down some utility lines.

Ginger Sleder saw the storm roll in but says the tree fell a bit later.

"It was a big tree. Fell over wires. Pulled the wire. Our house and our neighbors - we had no power," she said.

In Foxboro, a massive tree narrowly missed near an apartment building on Chestnut Street.

In Newburyport, fire officials said two lightning strikes were reported including one that resulted in a fire at a home on Pine Street just before 4 p.m. Authorities said lightning struck the HVAC unit of the Hope Community Church a few minutes later.

Authorities said both buildings were occupied at the time but no injuries were reported.

A two-alarm fire was reported at a home in Douglas at about 9 p.m. after another lightning strike. The damage was not severe and there were no injuries reported.
