Showers Incoming, to Last Through Evening

Showers Filling In For Most of Us in Afternoon

Today (Tuesday): Showers develop then turn to steady rain. Temperatures in the 50s. Overnight Tuesday Night: Rain tapers to showers, patchy coastal fog. Lows around 50. Wednesday: Cloudy, AM drizzle, evening showers. Highs in the 60s for most. (Published Tuesday, May 28, 2019)

We couldn't hardly ask for better weather on our unofficial kick off to summer this Memorial Day Weekend. Temperatures reached 80 degrees away from the coast again Monday. It changes dramatically on Tuesday, though.

A weak front was pushed from north to south late Monday, with much cooler air to set the stage Tuesday. Temperatures are in the 30s and 40s north, 50s south.

We should remain dry through the morning commute. But a system that generated tornadoes from Minnesota to Ohio the previous day brings cold rain to New England by lunchtime. Any severe weather likely stays on the warmer side of the system, which looks like it’s going to be just south of us.

With the wind from the east coming off the 55 degree water, our temperature will level off in the 50s as rain arrives mid-day and continues through the evening. That's when a few thunderstorms are possible near the south coast.

One wave of low pressure pushes east of Nantucket early Wednesday, but we likely remain mostly cloudy with low level cool air in place. High temperatures will mostly in the 60s, maybe 70 degrees if we get any sunshine away from the beach.

Another low pressure system is going to move south of New England Wednesday night with a chance of rain from Connecticut to Cape Cod. Rainfall amounts from the two systems combined by Thursday should be near an inch from many.

Though there’s not much change in the weather pattern, we are looking at drier weather coming in from Canada later this week. So even though it’s not warm like summer, when the sun comes back, out we should be able to get back into the 70s.

But the atmosphere remains energized so we have to keep the chance of a shower or thunderstorm pretty much each afternoon into the weekend, which looks pretty good at this time.
