Site of Old Worcester State Hospital to Be Sold

Land where a state hospital once stood is pegged to become the future home for biomanufacturing companies.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker has signed legislation authorizing the state to sell 44 acres from the Worcester State Hospital campus to the Worcester Business Development Corporation.

The site will be developed into an industrial park for biopharmaceutical manufacturers, eventually bringing up to 500 jobs to the city.

The project is part of Baker's "Open for Business" plan for repurposing vacant or underutilized state-owned property.

The administration says 85 properties in 41 communities have been identified since the program was launched in October 2015.

Worcester State Hospital first opened in 1833 as the state's first publicly-funded psychiatric hospital. It closed in 1991 and was later replaced by the Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital.
