The K9 partner of slain Yarmouth Police Officer Sean Gannon is recovering from surgery, according to an update from the Yarmouth Police Department Facebook page.
"OUR FOUR-LEGGED HERO!" the post read Sunday morning. "The men and women of the Yarmouth Police Department are proud to report that our beloved K9 NERO is back on his feet---FIGHTING back and standing STRONG!"
Later Sunday, the Barnstable Police K9 Foundation said on Facebook that Nero was "progressing with his recovery each day," and that he was able to walk down a hallway and eat some food on his own.
Nero underwent surgery on Friday, hours after being shot in the face and neck.
The department had posted on Facebook Friday to say Nero had survived the emergency surgery. They also said Nero is under full 24/7 Law Enforcement protection and will remain in the care and control of the Yarmouth Police Department K9 Unit and K9 Units all across New England.
Gannon was accompanied by Nero while attempting to serve a warrant at a home in Barnstable on Thursday afternoon.
The alleged shooter, Thomas Latanowich, 29, was taken into custody after a standoff with police. He was ordered held without bail following his arraignment Friday at the First District Court of Barnstable on a murder charge.
