Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing at Quabbin Reservoir

The pilot reported engine trouble

A small, private plane made an emergency landing on a sand bar at the Quabbin Reservoir Tuesday afternoon, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Police said the plane landed just within boundaries of the town of New Salem at 2:52 p.m.

The pilot, who is talking to state police through dispatch, reported engine trouble.

Police said the pilot, a 42-year old Newport, Rhode Island man, was not hurt and that the plane was intact when help arrived.

Authorities said it's unclear where the single-engine Seawind departed from or where it was headed. Police said there are no reports of any environmental concerns to the reservoir.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified, according to state police. Plans for removal of the aircraft from the sandbar are underway.
