Stabbing Suspect Subdued by Bystander

Suspect stabbed man over alleged disorderly conduct

Police officers responded to a reported stabbing in White River Junction, Vermont, Tuesday afternoon following an apparent drunken dispute.

The stabbing took place on South Main St. near the former American Legion building.

Elroy Litchfield, 63, was stabbed in the abdomen by 46-year-old Henry Chalmers.

Litchfield had allegedly asked Chalmers to leave the area because of disorderly behavior. While talking with Litchfield, Chalmers, who was said to be intoxicated, stabbed him before taking off on foot.

A bystander chased Chalmers down and tackled him to the ground.

Litchfield was taken to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for treatment. Chalmers was taken as well for an unspecified medical condition he claimed to suffer while being tackled.

Charges have yet to be filed in this case.
