State Adopts National Health and Phys Ed Standards

Vermont has adopted national standards for health and physical education.

Vermont has adopted national standards for health and physical education.

The state Board of Education voted to adopt SHAPE America's National Standards at a recent meeting.

Officials say the move allows educators to update their lessons with the best current practices and give them access to additional resources.

The national standards website says they encourage good health and reduce health risks by promoting decision-making, setting goals, and acting responsibly by respecting self and others.

The Rutland Herald reports a physical education teacher at Rutland Intermediate School says adopting the standards will help students become physically literate while learning why exercise is important. She says they'll also encourage students to participate in sports and recreational activities throughout their lives.
