Court documents are revealing disturbing details about the death of a 10-year-old girl in Stockton Springs, Maine.

Marissa Kennedy suffered months of physical abuse at the hands of her parents, according to a police affidavit. Her parents, Julio and Sharon Carrillo, have been charged with her murder.

A 911 call placed by stepfather Julio Carrillo reported Kennedy injured on Feb. 25. He initially claimed the child was found on the floor of the basement, and that she had fallen.

Police say the child had multiple bruises on her head, stomach, legs and knees.

In separate interviews, police said Sharon and Julio changed their stories and admitted to months of abuse. They allegedly told police that they instructed Kennedy to kneel on the tile kitchen floor and lift her arms in the air, so they could beat her with a leather belt. They added that they had hit her with their fists, and one time struck her in the ribs with a metal mop so hard that the mop broke.

The child was allegedly beaten multiple times a day, to the point that she could no longer walk or speak without slurring her speech. Her mother reportedly thought the child was faking her injuries, so she beat her harder.

Police say the parents tried to stage an accident scene in the basement, and came up with a story about the child accidentally hurting herself.

The Chief Medical Examiner ruled Kennedy's cause of death as Battered Child Syndrome, with lacerated liver, blood and multiple old injuries.

Sharon and Julio Carrillo will make their first court appearances on the murder charges Wednesday afternoon in Waldo County court. It's unclear if they have attorneys.
