Roxbury Stop & Shop Cleared to Reopen After Rodent Infestation

The store had been closed after dead mice and rodent droppings were found inside

Stop & Shop's Roxbury location has been cleared to reopen after a rodent infestation temporarily shut it down.

The store is expected to reopen at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

City officials said there will continue to be random inspections of the Stop & Shop on Blue Hill Avenue after decomposing mice and rodent droppings were found inside. The grocery store chain was required to submit a comprehensive safety and pest control plan.

"At this point I am comfortable that we are in a good place," said William Christopher, the city's inspectional services commissioner.

He said the store will be inspected every day until officials are satisfied that it is clean.

Stop & Shop said Wednesday morning that the condition of the store is of utmost importance. They said all areas are fully cleaned and sanitized and store officials will take steps to make sure nothing like this happens again.

Christopher had said earlier that he realized the store was a valuable resource in the neighborhood, but safety had to be the top priority.

“We fully recognize that there are residents in that area that cannot make a two-mile trek to another supermarket," he said, "but based on the evaluation of the place I decided that there was justification that public health was far more important than convenience."
