A 15-year-old student at a Boston high school has been charged with using a pencil to stab another student in the leg during a fight.

An officer assigned to Brighton High School responded to the fight in a hallway just around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The injured student, also 15, was taken to the hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening.

The suspect was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He pleaded not guilty and was held on $25,000 bail.

No names were released because both boys are juveniles.

Students stayed in their classrooms during "safe mode" for about 90 minutes.

No other students were involved in the incident or injured.

"Our staff and officers from Boston School Police immediately responded to this incident when it occurred," school officials said in a robocall sent to parents. "Our school was placed into safe mode for about 90 minutes as a precaution. This means that students stayed in their classrooms while the police looked into what happened. We are working closely with the police to ensure our school is safe."

Boston Public Schools is conducting its own investigation and says both students will be subject to disciplinary measures.

"The safety of students and staff is always our top priority at Brighton High School and in the Boston Public Schools. Violence of any kind is not tolerated," school officials said in the robocall.

School officials said there will be an increased police presence at the school on Wednesday.
