Sun-Filled Tuesday, Rain Returns Midweek

What a beautiful Tuesday we have in store. There will be plenty of sunshine and high temperatures stretching to near 70 degrees for the interior with slightly cooler temperatures along the immediate coastline due to a sea breeze. The last time we’ve had a nice stretch of 60 degree plus weather like this was back in October of 2017.

The dome of high pressure that brought us the fair weather this past weekend tipped over to the start of the work week. It is now moving off the New England coast, allowing for a southwesterly flow for our Tuesday and ushering in the warm-up along with a few more clouds ahead of our next system. We slip back into the unsettled weather pattern for Wednesday as rain, heavy at times, slides in after midnight tonight, making for a dreary, cool, and wet day region-wide.

Even though we’ve had a snowy and wet last few months, the last few days of pleasant weather have allowed the ground to dry up. Now that plants, trees, and underbrush are finally in bloom, we’re at an elevated fire danger over the next 24 hours before the rain settles in. Plus, with spring-time weather finally upon us, you may have noticed, especially if you have seasonal allergies, your eyes feeling itchy.

The rain that’s on the way will clear the air, but today will be tough for those of us who suffer from tree pollen allergies, especially maple, elm, poplar, and juniper tree pollen.

As for Wednesday, you will need umbrellas, rain coat, and rain boots as rain will be here all day. A few heavier downpours are possible in the afternoon and evening, bringing rainfall totals likely over 1.5 inches. Wednesday’s high temperatures will struggle to make it out of the 50s.

The rest of the week will feature a few lingering rain showers, mostly on Thursday, as the slow moving system exits. Otherwise it will remain mostly cloudy with high temperatures returning to the low 60s.

By Friday, any remaining showers will be in northern Maine on the backside of the system, but we’ll see a mixture of clouds and sun with highs into the mid to upper 60s. A few instability showers are possible by the early evening, which could produce a rumble of thunder.

For the weekend, Saturday features highs in the mid 60s with a few showers, but do not cancel any of those outdoors plans just yet because Saturday does not look like a washout by any means.

Sunday features more sunshine, making it the pick of the weekend with highs near 60 and drier conditions.

Next week we bump the temperatures up even more with 70 degree highs for next Tuesday through Thursday, with a chance for a thunderstorm late in the week as high temperatures near upper 70s.
