Openly Transgender Principal Loses Position at Swampscott Elementary School

A Massachusetts elementary school principal who recently came out as transgender will not return to her position at the school.

Swampscott Public Schools Superintendent Pamela Angelakis said Thursday 52-year-old Shannon Daniels will be placed on paid administrative leave for the rest of the school year, and her contract will not be renewed.

Angelakis declined to comment further.

Daniels publicly announced the change in a letter to parents in February. She formerly used the name Tom, and served as the principal of Stanley Elementary School since 2012.

Daniels has declined to comment on losing her job.

Angelakis says Lois Longin will serve as the school's interim principal starting March 20. Longin served as the district's former direction of curriculum and instruction.
