A 17-year-old high school student is in critical but stable condition after he was shot and pushed out of a moving car in Methuen, Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon.

Methuen police said they rushed to a stretch of Davis Road after a 911 caller reported that a teen had been pushed out of a moving car and was in the street. Police responded to find the 17-year-old with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

The victim was brought to Lawrence General Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery, was stabilized and then brought to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Police don't believe the victim's injuries were caused by the fall from the vehicle, as it was likely traveling at a low speed.

No arrests have been made. Methuen police are investigating along with state police. They said they are looking for a dark-colored sedan and do not believe it was a random incident.

"It appears that they were familiar with each other in some capacity," Methuen police Lt. Michael Pappalardo said. "We're trying to piece together all aspects and potential witnesses, as well as suspects, in this incident."

The shooting victim was a student at Methuen High School. The school superintendent put out a statement saying "The entire school community's thoughts and prayers are with the young man who appears to have been a victim of gun violence yesterday."

Neighbors said they were shocked at the shooting, as the incident happened right in the middle of the day.

"It's a nice neighborhood," said Holly Janco, who runs a group home nearby. "It's sad, it's sad. I feel bad for the victim, his family and everybody involved. It's terrible. I'm a mom myself, so I can't even imagine."
