Theft of Cash, Narcotics From Police Under Investigation

It doesn't appear that any evidence connected to ongoing or recently closed investigations has been compromised

State police detectives are investigating the apparent theft of cash and drugs from the Lee Police Department in Massachusetts.

The Berkshire district attorney says the investigation comes less than two weeks after the resignation of an officer assigned to oversee the department's evidence locker. The officer voluntarily entered rehab last month for substance abuse treatment and is cooperating with investigators. He has not been charged.

Prosecutors say the department requested an investigation in July when it discovered cash from a theft investigation missing. Prosecutors say more than $1,400 was stolen from the evidence locker, but later returned.

Authorities say drugs were stolen from the department's drop-off box that's used to collect unused, expired or unwanted medications.

It doesn't appear that any evidence connected to ongoing or recently closed investigations has been compromised.
