    Crowds Gather in Boston for Global Climate Strike

    Boston joined in on the worldwide, student-led global climate strike on Friday, Sept. 20, 2019. (Published Friday, Sept. 20, 2019)

    Thousands of people around Massachusetts were expected to join worldwide demonstrations spearheaded by young people to call for greater action on climate change, Friday.

    A huge crowd gathered at City Hall Plaza for the Boston Climate Strike — some 10,000 people were expected — organized by youth climate activists.

    Similar events were expected to take place at MIT and Harvard University in Cambridge; as well as in more than a dozens towns and cities including Worcester, Brockton, Quincy and Newton. 

    The rallies were part of worldwide events inspired by Swedish 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, who single-handedly protested outside of parliament, demanding lawmakers in her country threat climate change as a top priority.

    Organizers of the Boston event estimated that over 10,000 participants, including young people, would be on hand to demand “bold climate action” at the local, state, and federal levels; a “Massachusetts Green New Deal” and the declaration of a climate emergency.

    Boston City Councilor Michelle Wu and former Environmental Protection Agency head Gina McCarthy were among scheduled speakers.
