    Event expected to raise $600,000.

Several thousand people gathered today at the 2018 AIDS Walk & Run Boston event at Boston Common.

The event raised about $500,000, according to event organizers, with another $100,000 expected to be added over the next few days. This is the 33rd annual event designed to raise money for the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts.

During its more than three decades, the event has raised more than $40 million and drawn nearly 350,000 registered participants, according to figures supplied by organizers. The AIDS Action Committee operates the second largest needle exchange program in Massachusetts, with goals to eliminate used needles and reverse hundreds of potentially fatal opioid overdoses through prevention training and distribution of NARCAN, which counters the effects of opioids.

The AIDS Walk and Run Boston will took place at Charles and Beacon streets on Boston Common. The event drew 3,000 registered participants, many of whom attended in memory of love ones they've lost to the disease.
