Town Offers Free Month-Long ‘University'

What is likely Vermont's smallest and cheapest university is about to open, and close, for a second a time.

This is the second year the town of Bethel has offered Bethel University, a pop-up community school that offers free classes open to all. Vermont Public Radio reports that this year's offerings include everything from auto mechanics to Zumba, along with craft courses, gardening and dodge ball.

Organizers put out call for proposals in January, and the courses meet throughout the month of March.

The goal is to create a forum for people to share what they love and a way for others to learn and meet their neighbors. The project grew out of discussions about how to foster community after Tropical Storm Irene.
