Our eighth tropical storm of the season has been named: Hermine. As of Wednesday afternoon Hermine was located in the center of the Gulf of Mexico.
It’s a weak tropical storm with winds of 40 MPH and the system is drifting north. Hermine is still encountering some shear, and that’s why the satellite shows a lopsided storm. Thunderstorms are mainly to the right of the center.
There have been some significant changes to the forecast track. Two consecutive forecast model runs have pushed Hermine farther west. In meteorology we look at trends and this is a concerning one.
It’s way too early to get into specifics, but here is what we know:
- Surf will continue to build over the holiday weekend, which could lead to dangerous rip tides and an undertow at the ocean beaches.
- Saturday and most of Sunday look to be dry.
- Westren Track: Heavy rain, gusty winds - Nor'easter-like conditions possible. These conditions would be possible for most of eastern New England.
- Eastern Track: Interior New England will be dry. Cape and the Islands COULD see a period of heavy rain and gusty winds.
