Traffic Safety Advocates Planning to Gather at Statehouse

Traffic safety advocates are planning to gather at the Massachusetts Statehouse this weekend

Traffic safety advocates are planning to gather at the Statehouse this week.

Among the bills being pushed Wednesday by the Massachusetts Vision Zero Coalition and the group TextLess Live More is a measure to equip state-contracted trucks with side guards and additional mirrors to reduce blind-spots on large trucks.

Side guards are installed along the sides of trucks to help prevent bicyclists and pedestrians from being caught under the wheels of a truck and run over during an accident.

The groups are also pushing legislation that would require any use of mobile devices while driving to be hands-free.

The bills would also set a safe passing distance of at least three feet, lower speed limits on state roads and encourage the use of red-light cameras and speed cameras.
