Trooper Charged With Domestic Assault

A Massachusetts State Police trooper has been arrested for domestic assault and battery.

The 36-year-old Royalston man, whose name was not released by state police, was arrested just after 3 a.m. Sunday. Police say he assaulted a woman who was transported to Heywood Hospital in Gardner.

The victim's injuries are considered serious, but not life-threatening.

The trooper, who was off-duty at the time, is stationed at a central Massachusetts barracks. He was required to turn over his weapons, badge, cruiser and other police-issued equipment, as well as several privately-owned guns.

Bail was set at $25,000 for the suspect, who is being held at the state police barracks in Millbury. He is expected to be arraigned in Gardner Monday.

State police say the trooper's identity has been withheld due to a state law prohibiting the identification of domestic violence suspects under certain circumstances.
