UMass Boston Student Dies During School Sponsored Trip to Ecuador

A University of Massachusetts Boston student died Sunday during a school-sponsored trip to Ecuador, according to officials.

Fatima Breton, a graduate student of the John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies, died during the trip, according to a letter sent to the university community by the Dean of Students/Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

Breton was also an employee of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. The cause of her death was not immediately available.

Counseling is being offered to students, staff and faculty. Those affected by the death can also reach out to the Interfaith Campus Ministry for additional guidance and support, John Silveria, the Dean of Students, said.

Funeral arrangements for Breton have yet to be announced.
